50+ Network: Age Discrimination in Pensions – Big Changes Ahead

The Fire Brigade Union (FBU) has won a legal ruling that the way the Fire Fighter pensions schemes operated amounted to unlawful age discrimination. The Government has now conceded that the FBU ruling ‘reads’ across to the Civil Service schemes.  Accordingly the Civil Service has begun talks with the unions as to the remedies for this discrimination.  Before the Firefighters victory, the Civil Service had agreed with the unions that pension contributions would be cut and that certain beneficial changes would be made to the Alpha scheme. In light of the changed legal landscape, all those improvements are on hold.  John Moloney, who until the 30th June, this year, was a long-standing civil servant working in DfT, is now the PCS Union Assistant General Secretary.  As such he is in the talks with the Cabinet Office over pensions.  Come to this session to hear the latest, and to ask him questions as to what might happen now. The main talk will begin at 3pm, but please come along for tea and coffee from 2.30pm, to informally meet members of the 50+ Committee, and other colleagues in the Network.
